Staying in Tamarin
Tamarin bay is the heart of the village. It is one of the best-known surf spots in Mauritius, and on calmer days the bay suits swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking. Boat trips leave early in the morning to look for the dolphins that are often seen off this part of the coast.
Just inland, the Tamarin salt pans are still worked by hand, and their shallow basins are one of the most photographed sights of the village. Above them rises the Rempart mountain, whose pointed summit is a landmark of the west coast, next to the Trois Mamelles.
Tamarin keeps a village feel, with cafés, restaurants and shops within reach. Black River lies just to the south, with its jetties for catamaran trips and fishing, and Black River Gorges National Park for hiking. Flic en Flac and Le Morne are an easy drive away and, like the rest of the west coast, Tamarin gets plenty of sun and sunsets over the sea.
